Color Exercise #1: Tints, Tones, and Shades

Topics
• Three dimensions of color: Hue, Value (a.k.a. Brightness), Chroma (a.k.a Saturation, Intensity)
Pigment primaries (subtractive: CMY) and digital primaries
(additive: RGB)

Procedure (approx. 90 minutes)
• Create a chart with tints, tones, and shades for each of the three pigment primaries (CMY) and three digital primaries (RGB).
• One hue per chart organized with the pure hue on the left side and progressive rows of 4 tints, 4 tones and 4 shades to the right, ending with the furthest tint, tone, or shade that can still be considered part of the color family (a.k.a. not pure white, gray, or black). For the pure hues, you may use the RGB values on your color sliders in Painter or Photoshop, as denoted in the color formulae below. You should "eyeball" the tints, tones, and shades. Try to create equal steps of transition with each color swatch.

RED = 255R, 0G, 0B

GREEN = 0R, 255G, 0B

BLUE = 0R, 0G, 255B

CYAN = 0R, 255G, 255B

MAGENTA = 255R, 0G, 255B

YELLOW = 255R, 255G, 0B
